Updates released for Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server back in January proved problematic for many users. There have been widespread reports of 0x80070643 errors, and Microsoft acknowledged the issue some time ago.

But for anyone holding out for a fix, there's some disappointing news. The company says that it will not be releasing a fix for the problem, but is instead expecting users to follow instructions to sort things out for themselves.

Identity and permissions present a major security challenge

The average organization has roughly 1,400 permissions for every employee, according to a new report from Veza.

The findings also show that identity teams face a daunting number of groups and roles to manage. With organizations averaging nearly 700 groups for every 1,000 users, it is difficult for admins to choose the least-privilege groups and roles that will meet the needs of any given employee, contractor, or service account.

It is not clear quite how widespread the problem is, nor just how many VPN tools are affected. However, Microsoft is aware of the issue but is offering little in the way of help at the moment.

Combating small ransomware attacks

Ransomware Malware Cyber Attack

Ransomware attacks are so destructive that it’s easy to assume that all of them are large-scale in nature. However, this isn’t always the case, and ransomware gangs can do incredible amounts of damage with relatively small amounts of data. For example, an analysis carried out by Zerto of 116 globally diverse ransomware attacks spanning 43 different ransomware variants uncovered a median dataset size of just 183.5 GB.

When considered alongside a study carried out by Splunk, which says the average ransomware can encrypt a gigabyte of data in 47.7 seconds, the typical encryption detonation process for 183.5 GB of data would take nearly two and a half hours: That’s not very long at all.

LibreELEC, the popular open-source Linux-based operating system for Kodi, has officially released its 12.0 version, incorporating the new Kodi (Omega) v21.0. This is a huge update, particularly in upgrading device support and improving overall performance.

One of the major shifts with LibreELEC 12.0 is the move to a 64-bit architecture for several devices, including the Raspberry Pi 4 and 5. This change means users upgrading from LibreELEC 11 will need to reinstall Widevine DRM to continue using copy-protected video add-ons such as Prime Video and Netflix. Notably, systems running versions older than LibreELEC 10 will require a clean install due to significant updates in Python 3 since Kodi v19.
